Reflecting the trend of the state's diminishing role in Latin America, collaborative projects between nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and governments have emerged as important strategies for health reforms that increase the role of the private sector. Health Care Reform in Central America explores how health policies in El Salvador and Guatemala have created new types of NGOs and new forms of NGO-government cooperation, blurring the boundary between them.

Policy-relevant, practical case studies show how this transformation has dramatically affected the delivery of health care and the capacity of NGOs to serve the needs of civil society. The book concludes by comparing the Salvadoran and Guatemalan cases with those of Chile and the United States.
